Fully Funded and Flexible Early Years Leadership Qualification

You can apply for an National Professional Qualification for Early Years Leadership (NPQEYL) which is designed for Early Years Leaders (holding a Full and Relevant level) who are aspiring to be:

  • Managers of private, voluntary & independent nurseries.
  • Headteachers of school-based or maintained nurseries.
  • Childminders with leadership responsibilities registered on the Ofsted Early Years Register or part of a childminding agency.

How do to apply for the NPQEYL?

  • First, you should register for a Teacher Reference Number (TRN) email the Teaching Regulation Agency at enquiries@education.gov.uk
  • Choose a provider that offers the NPQ in Early Years Leadership. An up-to-date list of training providers can be found by visiting the below link *
  • When you have chosen your provider, Register for an NPQ on the DfE’s online portal
  • Your application will then be passed to your chosen training provider, and you will complete the application with them.

Where to do an NPQEYL?

All NPQEYL participants must hold a 'full and relevant' Level 3 qualification (or higher), prior to starting the course. The DfE has published a list showing the qualifications which meet the approved 'full and relevant' criteria for early years qualifications.
