New to the role of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCO)
Stepping into the role of SENDCO is a significant and rewarding responsibility. As a SENDCO, you play a vital part in ensuring the quality and inclusivity of your early years setting. You’ll coordinate support for children with additional needs and work closely with practitioners to uphold the standards outlined in the SEND Code of Practice (2014).
While the role may initially feel overwhelming, you are not alone. Your setting team is there to support you, and the Early Years Team offers guidance through training, consultations, and setting visits.
Below are some tips to get yourself prepared for the SENDCO role
- Familiarise yourself with the Early Years Website, especially the SEND section.
- Read ‘The role of the Early Years Special Educational Needs Coordinator’ booklet
- Review your setting’s relevant policies (SEND/Equality and Diversity Policies)
- Identify your Early Years Key Contact is – your manager/leader can support you with this.
- Gather information about the children in your setting, including those receiving:
- SEN Support
- An Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan
- Early Years Pupil Premium
- Disability Access Funding
- Support via Early Years SEN Inclusion Funding (SENIF)
- Read the “Early years: guide to the 0 to 25 SEND code of practice” to deepen your understanding of statutory guidance.
- Book on an Early Years SEND Briefing.
