The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act (2015) places a duty on early years providers to have regard to the government's statutory guidance Working together to safeguard children (2018) and to the Prevent Duty Guidance for England and Wales (2015)

In July 2015, the Prevent Duty became law, the guidance states that ‘schools and early years providers have a responsibility to actively promote these fundamental British values’:

• Promoting Democracy (making decisions together)
• Promoting the Rule of Law (understanding rules and boundaries)
• Individual Liberty ( freedom for all)
• Mutual Respect and Tolerance (treat others as you want to be treated yourself)

As an early years setting you should already be promoting the values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty and Mutual Respect and Tolerance as these are all represented within the Human Rights Act (1998) and the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (1989) The UK government is upholding these rights by asking schools and settings to actively promote British Values.
