Developing the 8am-6pm Wraparound Model
Developing the 8am-6pm Wraparound Model
Most schools have access to some wraparound care, whether this is onsite, delivered by a third party provider or care is provided offsite by a registered childminder or other provider. Some wraparound provision is not yet available 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday which is the government’s expectation.
Begin by contacting the Local Authority for support to assess the need in your local area, schools should regularly survey parents to understand if provision meets their needs and to plan future development of services for the school.
When considering setting up a new wraparound provision or expanding existing provision you will need to think about what parents need to support them, for example to work or undertake training or further education.
Example surveys can be found here: Parental Survey Guidance and specimen survey.docx
Once you have the results of the survey and have a need to develop or expand provision there are options to explore:
Wraparound care delivered by the school:
Space available
Staffing and recruitment
Resources and equipment
Providing a nutritional snack or light tea
Admin costs
Parent contracts
Health and safety of the site
Financial impact.
Marketing and advertising
Insurance
Alternatively a school can make space available to a third-party provider on a school site:
In addition to the above:
Premises – lease or hire agreement.
Access to the site – Key holder, caretaker, or any other arrangement.
Costs to the school – heating lighting etc
Partnership working to ensure safe transfer of children at the beginning and end of the school day.
