Qualifications/Experience:
Level 2 Early Years Qualification
Level 2 Certificate in Childcare
Level 2 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (EYP)
This qualification allows you to work as a nursery assistant under supervision.
Level 3 Early Years Qualification
Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator (EYE)
Level 3 NVQ in Children’s Care, Learning and Development
Required to work as a nursery nurse, room leader, or key person.
Enables you to be counted in the staff-to-child ratios set by Ofsted.
Unqualified Practitioner GCSE English and Maths
A grade C / 4 or above is typically required for Level 3 roles.
Equivalent qualifications (Functional Skills Level 2) are accepted.
Entry-Level Roles (Nursery Assistant / Apprentice)
No prior experience always required, but work placement or volunteering in a childcare setting is beneficial.
Must show enthusiasm, reliability, and a genuine interest in early childhood development.
Qualified Practitioner / Nursery Nurse
Typically 1+ year experience working with children aged 0–5.
Experience supporting the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework.
Ability to plan and implement age-appropriate activities and learning outcomes.

Core Responsibilities
Supporting Children’s Learning and Development
Plan, deliver, and evaluate age-appropriate activities that promote children’s development across all EYFS areas of learning.
Support children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development through play and exploration.
Observe, assess, and record each child’s progress to inform next steps in learning.
Encourage curiosity, creativity, independence, and problem-solving through structured and free play.
Safeguarding and Welfare
Ensure all children are safe, secure, and protected at all times.
Follow the nursery’s safeguarding and child protection policies and report any concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
Maintain awareness of health and safety regulations, including hygiene, first aid, and risk assessments.
Support children’s personal hygiene routines, including toileting, handwashing, and mealtimes.
Building Positive Relationships
Develop warm, trusting, and responsive relationships with children to support emotional well-being.
Work in close partnership with parents and carers, sharing progress, milestones, and concerns.
Communicate effectively with colleagues, management, and external professionals (e.g., speech therapists, health visitors).
Planning and Record-Keeping
Contribute to the planning of a stimulating and inclusive learning environment (both indoors and outdoors).
Keep accurate and confidential records of observations, assessments, and planning.
Participate in regular key person meetings, progress reviews, and parental consultations.
Promoting Inclusion and Diversity
Support and include all children, respecting individual differences, cultures, and family backgrounds.
Recognise and respond to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), adapting activities to meet individual needs.6. Teamwork and Professional Practice
Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain a positive and supportive team environment.
Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.
Reflect on personal practice and contribute to continuous improvement of the nursery. Comply with Ofsted requirements, nursery policies, and the EYFS statutory framework.
Creating a Positive Environment
Maintain a clean, safe, and stimulating environment with age-appropriate resources and displays.
Encourage children’s independence, self-esteem, and confidence in daily routines.
Model positive behaviour and support children in developing social skills and emotional regulation.
